Hello,
We have seen a variety of questions asking what ArchiveTeam /
https://www.archiveteam.org is and what we are trying to do with regard to Yahoo Groups. The message below is based on a variety of questions we have been asked. Team contact info is at the bottom. We also are sharing info on how you can save your groups yourself.
Q. Who are you? Where do you live? What is your address?
A. I'm one of many volunteers with Archive Team. We have volunteers
that hail from all across the United States, Europe, and Australia.
Q. Who is Archive Team?
A. Archive Team is a loose band of volunteer archivists,
programmers, and writers dedicated to saving our digital heritage. https://www.archiveteam.org/index.php?title=Who_We_Are and https://www.archiveteam.org/index.php?title=In_The_Media
Q. Why do you want to archive Yahoo Groups? What's the benefit?
A. We aim to save our digital heritage, particularly user-generated
content. Countless sites full of user-generated content have been
lost over the years. We hope to limit the losses. See
https://www.archiveteam.org/index.php?title=Deathwatch for
examples.
Q. Why aren't you sending emails from the archiveteam.org domain?
A. As a loose band of volunteers, we are using whatever email
addresses we have.
Q. Is Archive Team part of Internet Archive?
A. No. It is separate. It does not take direction from Internet
Archive. It does submit archived data to the Archive Team collection at Internet Archive.
Q. My group is no longer active, or it was for a very specific
purpose, or has moved elsewhere (like Groups.io, Facebook,
GoogleGroups, etc). Do you still want to archive it?
A. Yes, we would like to. Archiveteam.org is attempting to create a
public archive of Yahoo Groups before Yahoo permanently deletes the
data after January 31, 2020. We know that some of the groups that
moved platforms were unable to carry their archives to the new
platforms, or what they carried was incomplete. We can help bridge
that gap.
Q. My group is private, for very specific people only. Why do you
want to join my group? Do you still want to archive it? Can I create
an archive of my group(s) without ArchiveTeam's help?
A. It is up to you if you will allow us to archive it. If you don't
want us to archive the group, we encourage you to do it yourself
ASAP via https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/getmydata . See other
questions here for more details.
Q. How public is 'public'?
Q. Where will the archived data go?
Q. How can we get access to the archived information?
A. Archive Team uploads archived data to the the Archive Team
collection at Internet Archive (https://www.archive.org). The
Yahoo Groups data will be added to that collection. The collection
is not available through the WayBack Machine interface, and the
collection is not deeply searchable or indexed by web crawlers. The
data will be available to those who know it is there, and know how
to access it.
Q. Can I create an archive of my group(s) without ArchiveTeam's
help? A. Yes. Make a data download request at https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/getmydata (a GMD) before the end of day on Jan 31, 2020 which is when Verizon/Yahoo say they are deleting the remaining archives. In about a day or so, you will be notified you can download the data. If you are members of many groups, you may see the data split up into multiple ZIP files of 2 GB each. The groups are randomly placed within the ZIP files. ArchiveTeam is also happy to accept any GMDs that you are willing to submit.
Q. What aspect(s) of our group do you wish to archive?
Q. What data can you still save? I thought Yahoo disabled the web
interface.
A. Our experience so far is that message archives and files are
still saveable via GMD requests, however photos that were in the
photo sections are lost.
Q. Is this a free service?
A. Yes. Archive Team is an all-volunteer effort. We depend on the
Internet Archive to host the archived data and encourage donations
to them if you are so inclined. Archive Team is not the Internet
Archive.

Q. Are you affiliated with Yahoo/Verizon?
A. No. If we had the ability to stop the changes Yahoo has been
making to groups, we would. Sadly we have no such ability. We can
only attempt to minimize the damage they are inflicting on our
shared digital heritage.
Q. I have more questions. Who can I talk to?
A. The best way to reach someone at Archive Team is via IRC. We have
links on our homepage and below. Please be patient if no one replies right away...depending on who is around, it may be a few hours before the message is seen. http://chat.efnet.org:9090/?channels=%23archiveteam-bs http://chat.efnet.org:9090/?channels=%23yahoosucks
